I suspect the racing knowledge of people who say such things extends solely to watching Rush, the Senna movie, and Group B rally highlights on youtube. There was a time in the 60s and 70s when f1 was averaging at least one driver death per year, very often, under horrific circumstances. Only a bandwagon fan or a psychopath would consider that the "good old days."
Anyone who understands and appreciates motorsport loves it because of the skill of the drivers and the innovation of the teams, not because a driver might go off at a corner and burst into flames
