Could it be that Yahoo is just changing it's Q&A site to something different?

If they thought they could make money out of it without too much effort then they'd keep it in some form or other. You're thinking of something like Yahoo Groups which they shut down even longer ago - because it wasn't making them money. Forget all the other theories as to "why" they're shutting this place down. All businesses exist to make a profit and if this place cost more to run the servers than the ad revenue they take in then they're not going to keep it, are they?
