Is bass the least important instrument in the band?

You need the guitar and drums, and when you have keyboards, at least you can definatley hear them. Slap bass is cool, but most of the time i dont think i can even hear a person playing the bass unless its a keyboard synth type deal. It also seems like 99% of bass players just hangout in the background and don't do anything. I was going to learn the bass, but now i think id rather learn guitar after seeing all the hate online

I think that what you're really asking is the bass the least glamourous instrument in the band, that the girls don't go crazy for a bass player.  Sometimes it's true, other times it isn't.

I disagree. Bass-lines are often "in the pocket". Bass is crucial to define the bottom-end of the songs melody.

One band I know of that never had a bass player was the Doors.

No. The cowbell is the least important instrument. You barely ever hear it.
