Midwife Assistant or Midwife?

I am a CD(DONA) and I would love to be a Midwife in the future. I know there is extensive schooling for Midwife. But to get my foot in the door, should I go for Midwife Assistant or just go right for Midwife? My dilemma is cost and finding a midwife to apprentice or work under.

This would be for Home Births/direct entry (ie CM or CPM)

    I would do some research that's specific to your location (state, country, etc) because it can vary a lot with requirements.
