Why do the writers make Richard and Ben Parker die, is it a coincidence

In the first ever Spider-Man comic, Peter gets his powers, decides to cash in and become a local celebrity, let a robber walk past him, then that robber happens upon Ben Parker that night and shoots him and Peter realizes that he has to use his powers for good. That's been the Spider-Man story since 1964. Nothing has ever changed that except a few alternate universe comics, its been consistent in everything.
