Virtual Villagers 2: The Lost Children?

Okay, so my village consists of 15 people so far. I have the crops, but I don't have enough tech points to get the algae out of the ocean to catch fish. The problem is... I am running out of food! I have noticed that the crops take longer and longer to grow and I am afraid my villagers are going to starve and die! I also have no coconuts at the moment.

Does anyone know how long it takes for villager to die if they have no food? I am basically trying to find mushrooms to keep them alive, but there just aren't enough of them. I still have 100 minutes until new crops and I don't want to have start the game all over again. Any ideas, tips, advice?

Update:

HL...

Thank you for your answer... have you built the scarecrow yet? That will stop the birds from eating your crops!

I was in a similar situation to you. I somehow managed to survive it without anyone dying. It was even worse when the parrots just kept eating all the crops I did have so there was no food for anyone. I made everyone, apart from one person, work on the research table and forced them to get the tech points I needed for the next food upgrade so I could get rid of the algae.

The remaining one person I let take care of gathering food.

When villagers are hungry it slowly saps their health bar. You can see how close they are to dying by checking their profile and seeing how low it is. You do have quite a lot of time before they die and you can spot the weakened ones and help them out a bit by picking them up and making them eat from the food bin, whilst keeping those that don't need food quite so much away. They should probably all manage to last for the next 100 minutes until the crops come.

Pick every mushroom that you can see and keep your eyes out for them.

Then I discovered the cauldron. Whenever there was enough food (around 20), I'd then make up a stew with two of the purple flower (at the top right hand screen) and one of the orange one (bottom middle). Then I'd make everyone eat from the pot and it would completely restore their health, stopping them from dying. However, I'm not sure if you have the cauldron yet or not and so can use that.

There's a lot of really good tips at http://www.ldwforums.com/ and http://www.gamezebo.com/2007/02/virtual_villagers_... just watch out for spoilers since they tend to really ruin the game.
