Question for Dachshund owners...?

I have a little male black and tan dachshund. I found him about a year ago emaciated and scared next to the dumpster by my apartments. Well, he has turned out to be a really sweet little guy, but I can tell whoever had him before me was mean to him. He is really afraid of people (particularly men).

My question is, for other folks who have dachshunds... do your doxies sleep a lot? It seems that is all he does, but he doesn't seem depressed and he is only about 2 years old now. I have read that Dachshunds tend to be very hyper and high-strung, but this guy sure isn't! The only time he gets hyper is when he is left alone. He seems to have severe separation anxiety. Do any of the characteristics I have described jive with your pet?

Update:

Doxiemom:

He is around two (possibly a bit older, but not much). He has a smoothe coat, very short.

I have a dachshund and he's always lazying around! He really loves human company and wants to be petted and included in most things. He's a senior dog now and is slowing down dramatically! When he's lying in the sun he looks a bit depressed as well but i think he's just resting the poor old thing! Don't worry too much just give your dog time and if this is continuing for a long period of time then take him too the vet but for now don't be too concerned. Also, make sure you put the animal into rough routine for the moment so he can get used to the way you live easily. When he gets better you can change the routine more for mental stimulation. I hope this helped a bit!!

  • I have 2 doxies (3 and 7) and neither one of them sleep "a lot." If I'm home, they have to be up and with me. I think they sleep most of the time when I'm gone, tho. I wouldn't say dachshunds are any more hyper and high-strung than any other breed. What coat does your doxie have? The wired-hair variety act more like terriers and might be more hyper. Do you know how old your dog is? My first doxie slept more in his very senior years...

I don't have a Dachshund but my Sister in Law does and hers isn't all that hyper and he sleeps a lot or just lays around. I have heard that the wire haired one are hyper, the long haired ones are very calm and laid back and the smooth coated ones are a happy medium.

My male mini doxie is very laid back like yours. My female though is a different story, she's wired and yippy and sleeps early at night til morn but never during the day. I wonder if it might be because he's a male.

I just got a dachshund pup (shes 13 weeks tomorrow!) and she tends to get hyper and then sleep. Shes my first puppy to actually sleep THROUGH the night! I did check with my vet though just incase because I didnt think she should hold in her 'potty' that long. He said its fine though.

You should check with your vet or give him a call just to make sure there is nothing wrong with him.

Kudo's for rescuing him off the streets!

I onced had one and it was the greatest dog I ever had. It was not hyper at all. Your dog seems to have suffered at the hands of someone that apparently hates small dogs or whatever, . . . . .but U just need to love that dog and show it fun and games. It needs to get out and meet others as well. In time it may, I say "may" forget what has happened in the past, just as many of us do.

Try to be his/her best friend and in time it will get better. My dog slept when the weather was hot and when it was left along, otherwise it was the most fun dog to have around.

I wish U the best of luck. !!

  • i had a chihuahua like that who had been abused! acted the same exact way! but dont worry maybe it just takes him a little longer! (mine had seperation anxiety too!) if things dont get better within a couple of months take him to the vet! mine got much better!...but unfortunatly he got hit by a car!....

*****the best treatment is lots if love and affection!!!!!!******
