Basically they are 2 different body styles.

The Explorer is a 4 door SUV with an enclosed cargo area in the rear.

The Explorer SportTrac is a 4 door SUV with a small pick-up style bed in the rear.

Note: fuel consumption will vary depending on which powertrain you choose. Both vehicles are available in 2wheel-drive or 4wheel-drive & both vehicles have the options of a V6 or a V8

Here are some comparisons of just a few of the powertrain configurations.... you can change the comparisons for more detailed information

the sport trac has the pickup box and these are really good vehicals, if you want the sport trac for a box they don't hold much good for taking some stuff to the dump.there is nothing wrong with either of these trucks

EXPLORER'S are mid-sized SUV's. SPORT TRACK'S are the pick-up version of the Explorer. Average gas consumption is 17MPG. Compare the difference on yahoo! autos
