What are the safest neighborhoods in the Chicago area?

We are a young family with two small children relocating to Chicago. We have no clue what the safe neighborhoods are, and what are not so safe. Everybody has an opinion about what areas we shouldn't live it, and it is confusing!! Suburbs are ok too. Where are the best places to live in the area for families?

Well, the city for families is expensive, but the best areas tend to be clustered on the north side and near west and near south sides of the city. A lot of families live northwest of the city in neighborhoods like Avondale and Irving Park, far enough away from the city where you can actually afford a house, but near enough that you can hop on the Blue Line and be in the city in twenty minutes. Another great option is Beverly, on the far southwest side, a very cute part of Chicago with genuine houses. The best suburbs for families tend to be western - Naperville is famous, as is Hinsdale. Orland Park, Olympia Fields, and Homewood/Flossmoor are nice, and if you can afford the north shore, Glencoe, Highland Park, and Northbrook are very pretty.
