Is this a good idea and if so how come it isn't being done?

National Service in the UK. If you have left school and are not headed for further education or a job, then you will be drafted into a national service be it working in the fields, community service, clearing up the countryside, conservation, army, navy or airforce for two years. It would be run by the Armed services, armed services style. If loads of layabout ne'er do wells knew they had to do this graft for the same price as dole then they may try a bit harder to get into work or look into further training etc.. l

Have you got any idea how stretched the Army is? It isn't capable of providing 'care in the community' to a bunch of no hopers, even if it wanted to!

I am not sure if thats the best of ideas, i mean what if the person is taking care of a sick family member.. But if there is nothing that the person is doing at the time then that is a great idea it would show some that has never ever considered military careers that it is not such a bad life and may bring more enlistees

Can you imagine the type of people who would end up in the army??

One advantage of having professional armed forces is that they all want to be there and will do a good job.

Sounds good on the surface. That way Welfare would be put to bed overnight. However, it also smacks of socialism, but then so does Welfare. As for myself, I want less government involvement, not more. But I would be willing to vote in the affirmative for it to at least be tried to see how it works out. No matter what, it would be interesting.

Sounds like a very good idea. In the US. during the depression, we had the C.C.C. camps, the people in the C.C.C. built roads, dams bridges, etc, etc. It put alot of People to work, and improved there quality of life, not to mention in improved the country.

  • sounds good to me. Can us yanks steal the idea?
