Home remedies for Cradle Cap?

My 5 month old STILL has Cradle Cap (aka in my house as cradle crap, LOL).

I have tried 2 over the counter products, each for 4 weeks to allow time to see if they work and no improvement. I phoned the pediatrician and she said I could try a prescription shampoo or try Head and Shoulders twice a week. Well, I opted for H&S because I try to stay away from prescriptions when I can. Well, I have been doing that for almost 4 weeks now and still no improvement.

So, before I call the doc for the prescription I was wondering if anyone has any other (safe) ideas we could try. Any home remedies or Old Wives Tales? I'm up for any suggestions!

Olive oil, let it set for about 15 min and then give the little one a bath. Use a baby wash cloth (if you have one) or a normal wash cloth to gently remove the cradle cap. Use Burt's Bee's baby shampoo, it may be a bit more expensive but is 99% natural. Give your little one a bath about 3 times a week at least. This should keep away the 'baby dandruff' and cradle cap is normal. I have used olive oil and it works great. I only needed to use it once in 3 months. DO NOT USE BABY OIL this is mineral oil and does not soak into skin, it just lays on the top, clogging pores. Olive oil is best.

DO NOT USE adult shampoos, these contain harsh stripping detergents and can make the baby's sensitive skin even worse. And it can burn the little one's eyes

Tea tree oil is a wonder oil but is also a volatile oil and should not be put directly on the skin, most essential oils shouldn't (babies or adults). If you want to use it mix it with another oil (olive, vitamin E, almond) and only 1 drop will do for a little one. It is also great for congestion and asthma attacks, a few drops on the sheet in a bed works wonders.

    "Cradle Cap

Of all the things you envisioned while preparing for your baby, you probably didn't imagine dandruff-like flakes covering her scalp. But your newborn may indeed have scaly patches on her scalp and eyebrows. It's called cradle cap and it's perfectly normal. Cradle cap, or seborrheic dermatitis, is a form of eczema that is very common in infants. It usually begins in the first weeks of life and slowly disappears over the next several weeks or months. Most cases of cradle cap clear up by the time your baby is between eight to 12 months old.

Although it may be tempting to do so, do not attempt to pick off the patches with your fingernails!...Although cradle cap can be unsightly at times, it is harmless. However, if you have any questions, or if cradle cap spreads to other areas of your baby's body (beyond her scalp or eyebrows), call your pediatrician.

Remember to be extra gentle when massaging or washing around the fontanels, or soft spots, on your baby's head." http://www.baby.com/view.aspx?cid=557&pid=196

My mother vows olive oil is the sure fire cure. She says baby oil will not do it, but olive oil will. Rub it into the hair and all over the scalp and leave it. Maybe you could do it at bedtime, and put a towel under baby's head for sleep. Then, you could wash the hair in the morning so baby won't smell like a salad bar all day!

Anyway, Mother used this on me when I was a baby, and I'm 46 and haven't had cradle cap since! ;- D I guess it worked for me!

  • I've heard olive oil or baby oil massages can help...massage the oil into babys scalp...leave for five minutes...then wash it out with a mild baby shampoo really well....our son never had issues with cradle cap, but I've read about both of these in parenting magazines. best of luck!

BABY OIL!! It's like magic! My daughter started to get cradle cap when she was abour 3 or 4 months old and I gave her a shower, washed her hair very well, then put a good bit of baby oil in her hair. It went away so fast, completely gone in a couple of days. She's now 6 months old and it hasn't come back! Good Luck!

My pediatrician reccomended olive oil. I put a little on her head, let is sit for a while, then used a baby comb and a toothbrush to loosen it up, and finally washed it with regular baby shampoo. It took a few times over the course of a week or two but it hasn't come back all these months later.

baby oil works well, but you will still need to flake it off with your finger nail or a small baby comb. Try it when your baby is sleeping, because most 5 month olds wont hold still for long.

Pediatricians have no problem with parents lightly flaking the cradle cap away. Talk to your doctor if you feel uncertain about what is best for your baby.

My doc had me put baby oil on baby's head, leave it on for an hour, then wash it off.. It was difficult to have a baby with a oily head... but I would put a little hat on him and we were all dry :) That worked for my son, but he was a minimal case of cradle cap, maybe you should give that a try!

mineral oil or baby oil (they are the same thing) massage it into the scalp after washing your babies hair. be gentle with the brushing and combing as cradle cap can bleed underneath
