Weight lifting at 13 years old

I am 13 years old, about 5 foot 2, and weigh 100 pounds. I have recently started lifting weights, as I'm not really sure how much I should lift. I have been trying 20 pounds (total), how much do you think I should lift?

honestly you shouldnt lift weights that young, it will keep you from growing any taller,

also from the sounds of it, you should gain some weight, a boy who is 5'2" should weigh about 115 i think

No. It's not true. It's perfectly safe and healthy as long as you're lifting weights properly. ALWAYS use perfect form. If you can't, then take the weight down until you can. I'm guessing that the 80 pound max is on the bench press. As long as you're using the right form, you're not training more than 3-4 times per week or for more than 45minutes to an hour each time, you'll be fine. I'm glad that you're interested in weight training. It's a great hobby and can teach you a lot in time.

well it depends if you are talking about curls, benching or what? I assume your probably talking about curls and 20 pounds total is 10 pounds in each hand which is where i started. Im 14 years old, 5 foot 10 130 pounds and im at 40 pounds curling total and i barely lift. If you start at 10 now and lift like 5 times a week youll be at 20 in months

  • it depends on what your body can take i too have been starting to lift weights what ive been doing is startin off on a set weight that im just having difficulty on and doin that for a while after i get used to that and it eventually became easy so i switched to the next one up

According to my doctor, number one, you shouldn't be lifting unless you've gone through puberty, as it will cause problems in the future. Don't know what you mean by "20 pounds total." What are you lifting for--chest? legs? arms? Even lifting at a lighter weight but more repetitions is better than lifting too much, according to my doctor and trainer. Call your doctor. Call a trainer at the local gym.

lift enough weight to get through 15 reps. (but it should be really hard by the time you get to the last rep)

dont life any heavier than that- it could cause your bone platelets to close & fuse which stunts your growth

you can start lifting heavier (less reps) when you're closer to 16 years old
