can a 500mg antibiotic kill a hamster?

My hamster just died. It lived with two others which are still alive this time. A day before it happened she ate a capsule of antibiotic she found somewhere. Could it be overdosed because of it? I dont have other suspected reasons coz food and water are clean and she didnt have wet tail.

Update:

DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION IF YOU CANT UNDERSTAND IT.!!! MY HAMSTER ACCIDENTALLY ATE IT... NOBODY'S TRYING TO KILL ANYTHING... I'M FINDING THE REASON IT DIED.

    Uh, yeah.

I work in a pet shop, and when we treat hamsters with animal antibotic, they only have 0.05mg. So yes, 500 mg is a dangerous overdose, and is likely that's what killed her. I'd advise to be more careful with your medications next time.

it is possible. if you are sure that she's been given the best care, then... it's been a potential overdose. the proportion of the hams body vs. dosing is very alarming.

i guess meds are to be kept away from both pets and children.

    =(

Source(s): brought my injured hamster to vet doctor, was only given .05ml of antibiotics. anything is excess raises level of toxicity which can be fatal to hams.

It's quite possible... that amount if for humans, it could easily kill a little hamster

I'm sorry if you think that this might be the cause :(

    Hope this helps - Kelly
