When people use the term "troll" in a negative way, what does it mean?

Specifically, like I know "doofus" would mean the person is not smart or "freak" would mean the person was weird (sorry for the lack of good examples). But I just don't understand why the term "troll" comes up on Yahoo Answers so frequently when I have never heard it used in real life. Please explain. Thanks.

a troll is someone who goes on internet forums (this is why you've never heard it in real life) and says things merely to cause a stir.

trolls post off-topic & cause controversy. they don't answer the question they are replying to, or stay on topic in a thread. they are simply trying to cause trouble and get attention.

A troll is someone who takes their extra spare time to intentionally stur things up and cause arguments.
