Is it necessary to format and reinstall?

I've just had a problem with a virus which doesn't appear to be affecting the way in which my computer operates any more, however the person that was helping me over on a forum (and i very much respect her opinion and help) said the only way to make it completely safe again is to completely format my hard drive and reinstall windows.

the problem I had was google redirecting to random spam sites and i was also unable to update virus scanners.

Do you think I need to do this drastic of a thing or will I be ok to surf as normal now?

- update for second answer - the person helping me seems to think it was rootkit malware. Another nerdy friend seems to think I can or have gotten rid of it if nothing is coming up on my virus scanners...

I would definitely recommend a clean install. The virus could very easily have dropped something more silent on your computer, such as a keylogger, that can steal your passwords and sensitive information. This could lead to identity theft or worse.

Also, stay away from free toolbars and sketchy porn sites as these are notorious for installing this type of malware.

What kind of virus was it? if its Virut or an advanced case of Sality then a clean install is the only way.
