Reinstalling Windows: Will it be clean without the disk?

I've just had a problem with a virus on my laptop and was told to wipe everything reinstall windows and essentially start again.

I've been looking around at guides and found a method of reinstalling windows without the CD using files already on the laptop.

As these files are already on my laptop and not from a windows disk could they be infected with the virus?

Basically, is it safe to use files that are already on my laptop to reinstall windows, or am I just wasting my time trying to completely clean my laptop with files that could possibly carry the virus?

any help on this matter would be appreciated because I don't have a lot of money at the moment, and don't want to buy a new windows CD if possible.

thanks!

I am not sure what you mean by saying "use files that are already on my laptop to reinstall windows", but if you are trying to restructure you operating system within Windows because of a Virus that is not the way to go.

I personally do not like Virus scanners and cleaners, so I recommend doing a clean install. Now there are other ways of obtaining a copy of Windows Xp without payment, but I do not condone it, but it is very easy and accessible.
