Does my resume need a cover letter at an interview?
If I am interviewing at a different location of my current company for a promotion ( I was recommended by my boss) I assume I should take an updated resume since I have never met the person who will be interviewing me. Is a cover letter necessary or are they for obtaining interviews typically.

Usually you can just present the resume. The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself when mailing the resume. That will be taken care of in the actual interview.

Yeah, cover letters are usually just to get the attention of an employer to get you an interview in the first place and to give them more info. about you. So no, all you'll need is your resume.
