Comcast RCA Modem Issue?

I had a home telephone problem so Comcast just replaced my cable modem with an RCA Modem. Until now, Internet from Comcast worked WONDERFULLY - not a single issue in years of service. I had a motorola modem until the replacement. As soon as they installed the new RCA modem - two things started happening. First, my Apple Airport Extreme router occasionally reports that there is no connection and then auto-reconnects after about a minute. Second, and most annoying, DNS look ups take 7-10 seconds each time I try to connect to websites. Both problems are driving me nuts and comcast tech support is incapable of troubleshooting because they can see the modem each time I call to complain. Then they go down the path of "well, we don't support routers" and I just want to scream. :-) Could there be a documented problem between an Airport Extreme and the new RCA modem? Maybe some setting somewhere that I can change that would make the two work better together? Or is this simply an RCA modem issue and I should press for another replacement? Or any other thoughts?

Check to make sure that the "modem" isn't also a router. If it is, ask them to talk you through bridging it. All you want from that box is modem. If that's all it were, it would have no effect on DNS, unless it couldn't support the speed, in which case everything would be slow. Evidently the modem is doing the DNS lookup - which means that it's doing more than modeming, so it's probably a router. Which you don't want since, evidently, it's a pretty bad router. (And you have one that works.)

If they can't do that, tell them you want the Motorola modem back and, for telephone service, a VoIP modem. (Comcast is sometimes excellent and right on the ball and sometimes as intelligent as dead moss. I've never seen them anywhere in between. I'd suggest switching to your phone company, but they're usually worse when it comes to tech support [and speed and quality of internet service]. Embarq is an exception in some areas.)
