I lied to my boss. Will I get in trouble?

So, I clocked out and stayed a little late to finish some paperwork. My boss called and I answered the phone. I didn't want to get in trouble for working off the clock, so my boss said "did you open or close today?" (this was undetermined which i would do when I left yesterday.) so I said "I close" and she says "how was opening person?" I said" fine, they left."

Then I felt bad after i got off the phone with her, but called her back like 10 minutes later and said. " I'm sorry. I am a crazy person and I don't know why I just lied to you. I opened but I didn't want to get in trouble for staying late and working off the clock." She said "well thanks for calling and letting me know. I was wondering why you didn't open." and I said" yeah, i don't know what i was thinking."

Do you think I will get in trouble. I am usually one of the best, most well liked employees by my boss and she has been pushing to promote me.....hopefully I didn't screw that up.

Obviously, don't make a habit of that, but I think the fact that you called back and apologized will prevent you from getting into trouble, especially if you are so well-liked. Now if you had been caught later when the clock-in records were checked, that'd be a different story. Don't worry, we all "screw up" sometimes! Good luck on your promotion!
