How can I grow my herbs(parsley, basil, dill) effectively?

I've already tried changing the sun exposure, water amount, I've tried all-compost, and mixture of organic compost plus bat manure plus local soil, etc. But still the results were either the plant grow high enough(about 3 inches with few leaves) and then suddenly it will just die. The same results occurred. Please help me. Thanks.

I use mostly potting soil and a little compost and plant in a container. I've had really good basil plants and did ok with the parsley. The dill has not grown well at all. Have you tried oregano? That grows like crazy!
