Can I take food into Mexico with me and if so, in what quanities until duty is imposed?

I have an FM-3 and know that I can take used household goods into Mexico without paying duty, but what about canned food that I cannot find in Mexico that I wish to bring in?

Let me know if you have experienced crossing the boarder with an FM-3 bringing household goods and food into Mexico. What shoud I expect to pay for duty if anything at all.

Your FM3 allows you to live in Mexico as a temporary resident. It has nothing to do with Customs duties.

The Mexican government allows you to bring your entire household into Mexico free of Customs duty under its "menaje de casa" provision. This is a once-in-a-lifetime allowance.

Canned foods comply with international phytosanitary requirements, meaning that there is no reason to exclude them on the grounds of public safety. Unless the animal in the can is some protected species, there is no reason for Mexico to refuse your canned food entrance into the country.

You have a personal exemption of US$300 or equivalent in pesos for most items you wish to bring with you into Mexico.

Check with your nearest Mexican consulate for clarification. Here on the internet we're only unpaid armchair experts. And annoying ones at that. http://sre.gob.mx/acerca/directorio/consulados/dir...
