WHEN ENTERING MEXICO WITH MY CAR DO I REALLY NEED A GREEN STICKER?

I am going across the boarder of Mexico next week with my car and I plan to leave it there at my residence indefinetly in the State of Sinaloa. I have purchased insurance already and have a clear title and registration for the vehicle. What if I don't purchase a green sticker and get stopped for a traffic infraction? I thought the green sticker was only good for six months anyway. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

Leaving your car indefinitely in the state of Sinaloa means permanent importation of your vehicle. You need to talk to your nearest Mexican consulate, http://www.sre.gob.mx/acerca/directorio/consulados...

If you get a temporary importation permit for your car and you don't leave Mexico in the allotted time, your credit card will be charged for the amount of the importation fine. If you get stopped for a traffic infraction after the permit expired, well, that would mean your FMM-Turista had also expired. At such a point you might light a candle to the Virgin in thanks that Mexican law doesn't include anything along the lines of AZ SB 1070.

Temporary importation is temporary importation while permanent importation is another animal entirely.

Are you an American Citizen? Any American car taken beyond the border area must have a temp. importation car permit...yes, you will get in trouble when a transito sees an American plate and no permit sticker. ( I do not under stand why you call it a "green" sticker...I have never seen a green one.) When you leave, the car MUST go with you. The permit is good for 6 months if you enter with a tourist permit. If you have a No Immigrante ( FM3 visa, the permit is geed as long as you keep your visa renewed, and it may stay in Mexico while you fly to the states from time to time. If you do not have the car permit, they can simply confiscate the car. Period.
