What is a good ancient classic story or text to read first?

I have never read anything older than Shakespeare, and I would like to explore the classics. I'm open to reading plays, stories, even philosophies from the ancient times. I can handle big words, but I don't necessarily want to have to dwell on every sentence. I only made it through about a page of Plato's Republic.

How about Homer? I'd start with either "Odyssey" or "Iliad" ("Odyssey" is my favorite though).

As for a play maybe Sophocle's "Antigone" or Euripides' "Iphigenia in Aulis" and "Iphigenia in Tauris".

    I'd start with Homer.
