Why do people stick out their tongues before putting food in their mouth?

So many people seem to do this. They're not dumping the food on their tongues or anything, so I don't see why you would need to stick your tongue out.

Update:

@Jennifer: Once your mouth closes over the eating utensil, none of the food can fall out. How does the tongue help?

@Charm: People are still putting the whole spoon/fork in their mouth while sticking their tongue out, so the whole mouth would still get burned. The tongue is under the spoon/fork, so your tongue wouldn't get burned at all.

Maybe to make sure they've gotten hold of the food like so it doesn't fall down on your plate. Its like putting your hand under a cup of water filled to the top... so its doesn't drip as much or drip at all.

Better to burn the tip of your tongue if it's too hot than to burn your entire mouth and possibly spit it out from the pain.
