option for not displaying front license plate, CA?

I heard from a friend that there's an option for not displaying the front license plate in CA if you pay a fee at the DMV. I personally haven't heard of such things and I've seen a lot of people not even have something in the place of their front license plate (I have something in the spot of my license plate so at least there's something there). The thing is, my friend got pulled over once and was given a warning for not having a front license plate but you can tell his car is modded (mine is too, just his is more obvious). What's the actual answer here? Thanks!

In CA you MUST have a front license plate. If you do not have one you will get ticketed. The car can even be ticketed by parking enforcement when the car is parked. No front license plate = ticket.

Personally I wouldn't take anyone's word for it. I'd ask at the DMV or the local Police Station. Most states that issue two plates require front and rear or you get a ticket. Ny son and my boss both found that out the hard way here in TX. My son because he's smarter than anyone else and my boss because he thought that if a car lot sold him the car that way and there were no holes for a front plate then he didn't have to have one. Tickets for $150 made each of them smart. There is ONE provision here in TX. If you register it as an antique you only get one plate and it goes on the rear.

When I lived in LA and owned a Miata I never mounted the front plate and was never hassled. It messed up the look of the car.

I specifically did several surveys in the LA area and I found that 14% of all cars on the road did not have a front license plate or had a decorative plate. The stars and bars were the most common decorative plate. I also noted that at least half of Mercedes Benz and Porsche cars did not have a front plate, not even a decorative one.

i would highly doubt that. why would the dmv have a policy to make your vehicle less identifiable? I used to not have a front plate and while many cops ignored it eventually i was pulled over by highway patrol and given a warning. My car isn't modified but i do have dark tinted windows. Honestly if your car is modded and you have no front plate eventually you'll get pulled. Its like not wearing a seatbelt, technically its illegal but many officers will shrug it off. I live in CO by the way, not sure what CA laws are.

I have a collectable, 10th Anniv. ed. Miata that has never had a front plate (15 years!!!). Just got a ticket yesterday while parked/unoccupied at a park!! $93!!! Hate to drill holes now, after "she s" survived 15 years without!

You "heard" wrong. There is no such "option". If the state of CA issues 2 plates, they require that one be mounted in the front and one on the back of a car
