Should I refer to my one of my characters as a he or a she?

It Sounds like an odd question, I know. However one of the two main characters dresses up like a man, even though she's really a woman. She also goes by a man's name.

The point of view character knows this. However I'm not sure if the point of view character would refer to this person as a he or she. Your thoughts?

Does the character identify as male or female? If the character identifies as male then the POV character will refer to them as 'he' if they are considerate of their views and respect their wishes. If the character just prefers to wear men's clothing or similar but is still essentially a female, have them referred to as 'she' by the POV character and 'he' for people who don't know about this fact. A lot of it depends on what kind of person the POV character is and their relationship with the other character too.

If it's part of your story that there's a gender confusion in this character then yes, introduce this character as a women but describe her with the manly features and personality you initially had in mind. However, if it's not really a main issue in your story that this person has that, then what's the point, right?
