Is there a generic term for stalagmites and stalactites?

I'm writing a story. In it, there are stalagmites and stalactites. Is there generic way to mention them? Because mentioning them both all the time seems awkward.

The trick would be to describe them rather than just mentioning them by name (i.e. the crystaline spires - the frozen tentacles - etc.)

Just call them what they are and don't patronize your readers with descriptions.
