Is there a free way to discover how many searches a word gets per month?

I used to use Google's planner, but now they want a credit card and I wont' give them that. I didn't have an ad words account set up before the the change :-( So now that option is forever blocked. (unless I give them my credit card)

Is there another free way for this? The only ones I've found let you do a limited number of searches before they want a credit card too.

Lots of people who do want access to the Google tool just put $5 into an Adwords account but never spend it.

There are other tools, but they won't have Google inside track to their searches. There are paid commercial tools, some specialized ones like spyfu.com or SEMRush.com

Try searching: google keyword tool alternatives
