Why didn’t they tell me there would be a second interview?

I went in for an interview yesterday and met with the director of HR. She told me that many people haven’t responded to the ad for the position. So, she was pretty impressed to see how timely I was in responding back to their email for an interview. So, I interviewed with her and my supervisor. At the end, they told me that I should hear back next week since they were still interviewing people. Well, this morning I get a phone call from HR and they tell me that they would like to set me up for a second interview next week to bring in more people. Why didn’t they tell me it would be a second interview?

Second interviews are pretty commonplace so you should not be surprised about that

There usually are more rounds for interview.

Now you will have to prove your mettle in front of other shortlisted candidates.

Piece of advice, no matter how many times they tell you that you've got the job, don't believe it till they give you an offer letter.

    There are many possible reasons.

1.) They may have gotten some more applicants or are trying to get more, so they're starting from scratch. They want to compare all the applicants against each other, so they want to interview you all around the same time.

2.) You interviewed with HR, now you need to interview with the department you'll be working with (for example, if you applied to a sales position, you may need to interview with the head of sales). HR generally just filters people fit to work for the company but don't check your technical abilities. Sometimes they'll have HR and the department head interviewing you together like on a panel. There were times when I got approved by HR, but my technical skills were lacking, so the department managers denied me after their interviews.

3.) They didn't get many applicants. They might really need someone for the job, but they just weren't sure if they thought you were fit for the job or not, so they want to interview you again.

4.) They just forgot to tell you there will be two interviews, and it was their plan from the beginning.

If you feel like that's a little unfair and demanding or unexpected, like the company seems sketch or like slave drivers or something, you can always choose not to go through with the second interview.

She wanted to see if it was possible you would not blabber on here about it. You failed.
