Car question?

So I have been wanting to update my car I want to spend $4000 to $5000 $5500 ish in that range. I like convertibles like the Mazda mx5 there are a few cheepish ones but my dad says getting one of those I will be asking for trouble. He David they leak and are cold and are a pain to fix. I also like the Toyota brand. What are some good affordable cars? Ones that look expensive I would like? Thanks for the help!

Miatas'/MX5 hold their value.  Even a decent shape 1st generation Miata still commands a premium on the used car market for a couple of reasons:

    1) they're not all used as daily commuters so the mileage is lower and

    2) owners generally look after them.

Yes, you can find lower cost examples but your dad is correct.  Those are cheaper for a reason...

Been there, done that, currently have....

Had a '61 Sprite in '65, a '67 Spitfire in '70-'72 -- No leaks, not cold, were easy to work on.

Convertibles are for those who cannot ride motorcycles.

When I could afford two vehicles, I got a motorcycle and a truck.

Could not ride any more, went to get a small, cheap 2-seat convertible.

The Miata is low, getting down in a low car is painful, hence I got a tall Fortwo.

It, as any late car, is very reliable.  No problems, no leaks, not cold, and when the weather goes over 98°F I can close up the car and run the air conditioner.

Don't buy a Chrysler Sebring convertible. They have motor problems.

If you're dead set on a convertible either a Ford Mustang or Toyota would be my pick.
