What caused the collapse of the famous Puerto Rico radio telescope? What will replace it?

    over 50 years old in the humid jungle. The replacement is a bigger one, 500M wide.. in China. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02790-3

    The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope in the municipality of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. As of 2018, the observatory is operated by University of Central Florida, Yang Enterprises and UMET , under cooperative agreement with the US National Science Foundation (NSF).

    Probably structural damage caused by hurricane's/tropical storms with an underbudget for maintenance. Will it be replaced? That's the billion dollar question.

    It was damaged over time by a number of hurricanes leading to the failure of support cables. It's not going to be replaced.

    A couple of suspension cables broke. They knew about this but it collapsed before they could do anything. There are vids on the 'net.
