What is a subcontinent and how many are there?

We call India/Pakistan/Bangladesh a subcontinent. They are on their own tectonic plate which has been 'colliding' with Asia for millions of years, pushing up the Himalayas. People refer to 'the Subcontinent' when they're talking about India.
I don't think there are any other subcontinents.
