I have a series 70 kenmore washing machine which was working and now just humms?
I tried different settings but all it does is hum. Does not drain water, spin, agitate...just hums.
What is going on?
There is something keeping the motor from running. When it hums for a short time the breaker will trip. There is something mechanically jamming the machine or perhaps a fuse to a location? It gives a burnt smell (electrical) before the breaker trips.

I work for Sears and I can tell you the vast majority of our washers since 1983 do NOT have belts. They are direct drive which means the motor is connected directly to the drum. If you're getting a humming sound, it means there's either a problem with the motor or most likely the connector between the motor and transmission has failed.

Most likely, the belt has got loose or broken. The humming is the washing machines motor, minus the belt.

Drive belt has gone.
Get a man in.
