Kenmore Washing machine not running.....Just hums?

I have a series 70 kenmore washing machine which was working and now just humms?

I tried different settings but all it does is hum. Does not drain water, spin, agitate...just hums.

What is going on?

Additional Details

There is something keeping the motor from running. When it hums for a short time the breaker will trip. There is something mechanically jamming the machine or perhaps a fuse to a location? It gives a burnt smell (electrical) before the breaker trips.

Sounds like the motor has jammed: remove the rear panel(unplug from mains first) and look at the centre drive wheel this has the drive belt on it and is connected to the motor at the bottom try and turn the drum by hand if it wont turn then the main drum has jammed possibly by a piece of washing stuck inside to get access to the inside you will have to remove the outer plate of the drum its major operation and if your nit confident get someone to do it for you if its only the motor if it turns it only the brushes these are easy to replace get the model and make and go on line to the manufacturer site and order them the old ones just have to be forced out with a screwdriver the new ones just push in and click

Could be the motor itself is going out. But it could also be that the connector between the motor and the transmission has failed.

    Could be locked gear case!
