Do I tip the valet who parks my car?

The restaurant I worked at for years had valet parking, and having listen to the endless complaints from valets on the subject of tips I have learned this:

*most people tip the guy who returns the car (as they pooled their tips, this was ok to them)

*if you tip the first guy, you will probably get your car back very quickly, but now the 2nd guy will feel slighted if you dont tip him as well (even when they pool the tips, i know, they are greedy).

*a dollar was considered an average tip. anything more then 10 makes you cool in their eyes. And again, they WILL remember you for this.

*if you dont tip them anything, they WILL remember you and make you wait in snow/sleet/rain as long as possible before you get your car back - god help you if you come back another time.

Other things they did to chronic no tippers include adjusting all your presets, arming the car alarm when they give it to you so it goes off in front of everyone, leaving your windows down in cold or inclement weather, releasing air from the tires (only a little) but NEVER dents or key marks. They have to be insured to work and that kind of stuff can get them blackballed by insurers making them unemployable...

well both men are doing you a service so I would take the tip and give half to the guy who parked the car and half to the guy who brings it back.

i sometimes tip them both. but the guy who brings the car around safely gets tipped more because he was careful bringing my car back safely
