An offline GPS application for smartphones?

I'm looking for an application - I'd guess in java- that is a gps map program that doesn't need to be online for a smartphone. I'd guess it would be big and I have no problem putting it on an SD or micro SD. So many times you go out of range of your cellphone provider but the phone has GPS. No signal no map. I wouldn't even mind just adding my own state to get more detail. I'd love Google Maps but anyone have a recommendation? I'm looking for a free solution preferably.

Update:

Yeah Liz maps work too. Actual maps must be the original "distracted driving" pre dating texting. It's impossible to lose a gps signal unless your in a cave or you have a bad gps. They're in the sky. The same reason I don't ride a bike and me wanting to use a gps is that as a society we've progressed. I have a car and want gps on my not so smartphone. (i have an actual gps in my car but this phone has one too and it bugs me) The map doesn't blink back at me and tell me how lost I am. :)

I hear ya, I have maps but I hope I don't have to get them out.

Sort of, I keep a couple in my car in the seat back pocket in case my GPS (again) "Lost satalite signal"

Old fashioned things called "Maps". Low tech, but work reliably.

You can take a screen shot of a map and still "zoom" if you must. But it can't tell you where you are.
