  • How to mix my own paint?

I got a hvlp sprayer for Christmas and I've studied up on the ratios, thinner, viscosity and general best practices for the sprayer itself. Setup, cleaning, technique, filters and all that. Lets pretend I have that figured out and jump to how can I mix my own colors?

I've mixed press ink in the past and that was a matter of a scale and 40g of cyan and 50g of red --- and so on... Mix it all up and you have your custom ink. Assuming I could get Red, Green, Blue at the same viscosity first, then thin out as needed. Is there a website or an app that can give me the mixing amounts or is this not how it's done in the paint world? I'm not painting a house. These are small projects like refinishing tables or chairs or mods to my computer. I'm aware I won't be using the same paints for those different applications. I don't need my table to be rust proof. On the other hand if it's just easier than I don't care. I also don't need to be matching 100% to a paint chip at first. I need to be in the ballpark and learn from there.

  • FAVI RioHD-LED-2 - Replace LED Projector Lamp- (photo) What Is This?

I'm trying to replace this led lamp and I can't get any info about it from the horrible company FAVI. Steer clear of this company. But I'd like to fix this projector because it's free and it just needs the lamp replaced. Guaranteed for 20,000 hours by the way. BS!

If anyone could tell me the type of LED, or point me in the right direction. Any help is appreciated. There are no distinguishing marks on the front or back.

  • What state in the USA has the cheapest heating and cooling costs?

While Minnesota has high heating costs in the winter, and Texas has high cooling costs in the summer (as an example) , what state has the lowest price all around? What state uses the least amount of energy? I'm not really asking cost wise, but more energy used wise? I assume it's in the center of the Midwest but near the ocean is also fairly consistent as well. Just curious.

  • iPad 3 - does the 4g network fall back to 3g outside of 4g coverage?

So if you get the new iPad with 4g service can you use 3G as a fallback and does AT&T fallback to "edge" network or are you out of luck? Looking at the 4g map I have no idea why you'd want this unless your in a major city?

  • An offline GPS application for smartphones?

I'm looking for an application - I'd guess in java- that is a gps map program that doesn't need to be online for a smartphone. I'd guess it would be big and I have no problem putting it on an SD or micro SD. So many times you go out of range of your cellphone provider but the phone has GPS. No signal no map. I wouldn't even mind just adding my own state to get more detail. I'd love Google Maps but anyone have a recommendation? I'm looking for a free solution preferably.

  • Outdoor table- what's worse weather wise on an out door table? Winter or summer?

This is Minnesota I should mention. What's harder on an outdoor glass and aluminum table? Winter or summer? I'd argue winter is easier as its just snow and cold as apposed to summers sun and rain. Any thoughts?

  • Green Power- are Stirling Engines real?

Are there reasons why Stirling engines aren't widely used or aren't in production? I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube and while the Sterlings are varied in size, quality, output and so on, why aren't these sold along side solar panels? This one in particular is essentially a frenzel lens/ parabolic mirror that heats it and turns the wheel and could be made with an alternator fairly easily. Solar panel sun trackers are easy enough to use. What am I missing? Is this all BS or a crackpot pipe dream? It's not like it's a perpetual engine as it takes heat to run it.

Say whatever you like about this video in particular but the general idea itself seems strong.

  • I want a -time lapse- video program for video I've already shot (not for photos)?

I DON'T want a picture program that puts photos together. Had that, done that. I have some videos that are an hour in length (sunsets). My videos are shot at 720 and 1080 video. I use both Macs and Windows pcs so i'm up for either. I'd like to get the time from 1 hour to around 30 seconds.

  • Is there a megapixel amount that would make a zoom lens irrelevant?

This is theoretical question, though maybe not too far off time wise. All digital zoom looks bad so far in my opinion but if you had a point and shoot with 100 megapixels wouldn't you be able to pick a zoom later or change the zoom using the raw photo? Wouldn't a 100 megapixel camera (I'm using 100 megapixel for a big number- not sure of the real number) give you the same result as a 300mm zoom lens? In theory?

  • basic digital photo frame - add rss feeds and news and pictures?

I have a HP photo frame and it's pretty basic. It has a little built in memory and I can also add a 2 gb card. I can hook it up and add whatever jpgs I want of course. A few years back the site framechannel.com used to offer a way to download rss feeds and other custom channels that you could download daily. They started selling their own frames and that all ended as far as I know. I'm looking for a site/program that I could get rss feeds as jpgs in condensed versions with pictures in the background and just so it looks nice. Local sports, weather, custom rss feeds. I've done this before and it seems like every site wants you to buy their new frame or service. Any recommendations for a site that provides this? I have an iPad, iPhone and my old digital frames just collect dust. It's silly.

Even back then it seemed bothersome to take the card out, put it the computer, download, put back in +++ I've since found USB extenders and I can put the frame 25' -50' away, and just have to plug in the frame while it uploads. ("usb cat5 extension" from ebay- works great for webcams too, although I use cat6 for longer runs). I have to plug the frame in to the AC anyway so I don't care.

  • SOLDER fumes- What's the safest solder to use indoors - that works the best of course?

I do more soldering nowadays and live in Minnesota. In the summer I do it outside- no problem. It's now winter and I want to do some inside. I'm talking about maybe 20 spots an hour. For only an hour. I'm not running a shop or anything. The room isn't a box but it's not "well ventilated" either. I realize I'm asking a dumbish question, like what's the safest cigarette but, It's -20 below at times. What should I look for in solder (and flux for that matter) and what to stay away from if possible.

  • Playon - on the Wii- outside of my home network?

So I'm so smart I thought I'd bring my Wii to the cabin and watch some Hulu. Works great at home so I thought I'd give it a try. Can't find my home computer to watch. I can however use my iPad and iPhones so I know its working. I've tried the (on the wii) m.playon.tv and the playon.tv . Nothing. I know it was working with regular playon.tv. How can I get this to work? What am I missing?

  • Codecs Manager? Is there such a thing? Video problems - Orb.com / WinTV7.2 with extend, ++?

    For "Windows 7" 32bit-

WinTV7.2 with Extend, Slingbox (always solid), Orb.com / Orblive (iphone), Ustream Producer, Windows Media Center,

So I have a lot of video programs that seem to have conflicts at times. I can't really blame the computer for being confused. Microsoft doesn't help the situation as far as I can tell. It's turned into a "Black Art" to make it all work. "Hope" shouldn't be in my tool-belt and I'm sick of this. I use these all for different things so yes I need them all. Not usually at the same time of course. My only semi breakthroughs are stopping a program at start-up or closing then restarting, and reinstalling so the last install takes precedence (hopefully). It's also not a Windows 7 issue as I just left Vista and it's all the same. It's a Codec Cornucopia Cavalcade of CR@P. The Quad C as it were.

Does anyone have advice on how to get a better handle on this? Am I missing something? I've looked for programs/utilities on download.com and I got nuth'in. I hope I'm just not searching right. Is there a way to force codec sharing or duplicate the codecs and separate them?

Any tips / tricks you may know of would be helpful.

I love computers but there a few things I didn't want to know anything about. Networking, Codecs, Registry +++ I now feel dumber knowing what I know.

  • dd-wrt - 801.11b,g --WiFi transmission distance--?

I help maintain a wireless network (home with a few outbuildings) and have a potentially odd request. I'd like to slow down the network. If someone on the network opens say Hulu, or Netflix it does a quick speed check and streams at the highest/HD rate. I'd like 2-3 people to be able to stream at say 1mbps. I only want to offer 2-3mbps at the highest so people can't tie up the network.

    So- It's a DD-WRT Linksys with v24.

In "Wireless, Advanced Wireless". I have turned basic rate to "1-2mbps" (the network is at "mixed") and the transmission rate is at "auto". I then run a speed test and it's around 10mbps. Mission not accomplished.

Q - If I turn down the transmission rate to say 11 or at 5.5 the speed obviously goes down but then my signal doesn't go as far right? Isn't that essentially 802.11b? And G goes farther right?

While I want to slow down the speed I don't want to lose the coverage. Any ideas? I don't think there is a right and wrong answer. I know if I went "dd-wrt pro" I could slow it down per mac address but I just want to do it across the board.

  • Where to start when picking a new motherboard+processer(s)?

I have and older system (2ghz) and want to speed it up and go with dual processers (or quad?) I think. I also want to keep most of the rest of my system (dvd burner, multiple ext HD and internal HD. I want to be able to do video (PVR) and I guess that means HD too. I assume I need a new motherboard capable of dual processer and a new graphics card + ram. Where do I start. And PS I'd like to keep my case as its the right size for me and it was custom built anyway. How do I size my board and what do I need to know when looking for one?

    Where do I start? -
