NFL draft question?

simple question here. if a player gets picked in the drat does he have to play for that team?? Can he turn down that team if favor of another (assuming he gets picked again)? or is it once a player has declared for the draft and he is picked... thats it.. he works for the team that picked him?

If you get drafted, you have to play for the team.

No he doesn't have to sign with that team. He has the ability to hold out and not sign. He won't stay in the draft, and isn't eligible to be picked again. The drafting team basically has to trade that player. Eli Manning did this a few years back. He didn't want to go to the Chargers and they were forced to trade him to the Giants.

I think this rule should be changed so that when a player is drafted they need to stay with their team a minimum of 3 years. That way when/if they develop the team that drafted them would get some benefit out of them before trading them.

If you are talking about during the draft the player can't say, "no I don't want to, pick again and put me back into the draft pool." During the draft if you are picked by a team you are picked by that team.

The player can later demand to be traded to another team.

The player can hold out and not sign a contract, but that doesn't exactly help the player as it can backfire. Because the player will not be paid, and if the team refuses to trade or release the player the player can not go to another team or get paid.

Once in awhile the drafted team decides it doesn't want a player it drafts and released him shortly after drafting or signing him to a contract.

He is stuck with that team, but he would have the option to hold out for more money or demand a trade. The chances of more money are slim but are slowly becoming a more common thing ( Jamarcus Russel ) but a trade is extreamly rare... " Who are you to demand a trade? Your just a rookie " But you are stuck with the team that drafts you, even though you do not have a contract agreement. In order to enter the NFL draft you have to agree to this in their "Terms and Policy" so if you dont get drafted then you have the option to find a team you want to try out for, but you are less likely to make the roster.

when a team drafts a player they 'own' that players rights. if the player refuses to play for them a trade can be made or the team could hold the player on their roster. to play for another team the player must either be released from his contract or traded. if they are drafted but do not sign with the team the player can 'hold out' and reenter the next draft. a lot of players threaten to do this but no one has yet. Jamarcus russell took until week 10 to sign last year and it was considered a negative move for his football career

The only way a drafted player can play for another team is to either get traded or sit out a year. Or gets cut and picked up by another team.

I was just talking to someone about this the other day. Usually, it's the guys that you wouldn't look at in college and think they are going to be amazing in the NFL. It's guys who have a chip on their shoulder, don't come from the big name schools, don't get the respect or something along those lines. They have to work hard to prove themselves whereas the guys from the big-name schools or who are in the spotlight from the beginning with high expectations feel more entitled. Look at Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer. I don't mean to pick on USC guys. Look at Chad Henne and Brady Quinn. Now look at Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Kurt Warner, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, even John Elway. What the first person said is basically true but not totally. Like I said, it's the guys who always have to fight. Brady had to fight to start at Michigan. Michigan fans wanted Drew Henson to start, not Brady, and Brady and Henson split time for a while. Where is Henson at now? What did he do in the NFL? Another example. Michigan DID win with Brady, including an Orange Bowl over Alabama, but yes, a lot of people did not really see the potential back then and I think guys on the Big Ten Network who give add-in commentary during old games with Tom Brady at Michigan are lying when they say they saw signs of what he has become. Part of the reason he "wasn't great" at Michigan is because I don't believe Michigan even really totally saw what they had in Brady and, consequently, wouldn't just let him play as much as he could and give him enough of a chance to show his potential. He was buried on the depth chart at one point and was sitting behind crap-@ss Brian Griese (again, what did HE do in the NFL and where is he now? Commentating for ESPN).

Perfect example is the big baby that cowers every time the ball is hiked to him Eli Manning. He got picked by the chargers int eh draft and came close to tears as he whined "I dont want to play for this team" and asked for a trade. The chargers traded Big baby boy Eli to the Giants for Phillip rivers in return. I hate Eli and i hate the giants. If anyone thinks Eli will be productive this year hahaha think again. Let him keep hurling absolutely innacurate balls into the air intended for no one so plaxico (Giants only talent) can run and make the play on just like all their touchdowns. Complete garbage.

Im pretty sure the guy who said you could re-enter the draft the following year is correct.. Bo Jackson was drafted by Tampa but elected to play Baseball, then a couple years later was drafted by Oakland .
